UK Ports are transitioning to full electrification whilst operating complex electrical infrastructure with critical uptime requirements.
Vattenfall provides a key service for transport and cargo hubs. We can integrate new technology to support the electrification of cranes and ships by designing and operating smart grids, stand-alone micro-grids, and renewable energy systems to ensure reliable power supplies.
Port operators are responsible for critical High Voltage (HV) electrical infrastructure that can impact their ability to compete on a global stage. These network require a high level of maintenance and expertise to ensure the operator meets their business requirements and health and safety obligations.
Power cuts and 'brown outs' (short disruptions) on the private network can have huge ramifications for port operators. Investments in power infrastructure including the replacement of transformers, switchgear and cables, are often managed on a replace on failure basis. Rarely is there a network asset management plan (NAMP) in place and a programme of asset replacement.
Furthermore, the perssures of climate change and air pollution in and around ports provide additional challenges for port operators.
The electrification of cranes, cold ironing, shore-to-ship power (SSP) and boat electrification are key areas for port operators which, if managed properly, can help ports to operate more efficiently, reduce costs and meet their carbon reduction targets.
Ports' High Voltage (HV) assets can be transferred to Vattenfall for 10 years for an asset transfer value paid by Vattenfall. During the agreement Vattenfall will hold asset failure risk, asset replacement and operations and maintenance activities for a flat annual fee. At the end of the initial 10 years the assets can be returned to the original owner or the agreement can be extended.
We can also advise on and deliver the integration of renewable energy, solar, heat, battery storage and electric vehicle charging infrastructure for operational, staff and public transport vehicles.
